Mt. Ord to Sunflower Mine background

Mt. Ord to Sunflower Mine

May 21, 2023 40 mi 2200 gain Out + Back
Route Map

Located in the Tonto National Forest, Sunflower Mine was active from 1913 to 1965. The mine was primarily a mercury-producing mine, but did produce copper, silver and gold. Inside the old processing building, there is a large pipe used to process cinnabar, a reddish-brown ore. The ore was burned with coke in furnaces to produce mercury gas, which then liquefied after being cooled. The trail is considered very difficult with tight narrow roads that are loose, rocky and overgrown.

A couple of land owners checking me out
Pre-ride mini camp
Mazatzal Mountains
Mogollon Rim way off in the distance
West Fork Sycamore Creek
West Fork Sycamore Creek, had to turn back the route was too primitive
Trying FR3721 to Sunflower Mine
Coming down this trail was tough, going up was nerve wracking, took me 2 tries to make it
Sunflower Mine is down there somewhere, we had to abort! It was getting dark and we had a few miles of difficult trail out and another 10 miles to mini-camp. Will have to try again another day.
